Communication with Subs

Hi everyone, and hopefully everyone had a great holiday. Today I will be talking about how people communicate towards substitutes in either good or bad ways. Many people take advantages over substitutes because they think that they could get away with it and sometimes they do even though they know they did a bad thing. Substitutes are sometimes soft to students because they don't know them much or tries to avoid any arguments with the students but anyways students could show many rhetoric towards a substitute in either a good way or bad.

There are many different types of subs even good or bad ones but most of what I have seen are good at doing their jobs. Communications between the substitutes aren't that great most of the time because there will be a person who always influence others to do the wrong thing like my class in 6th grade when my class (Ms.Phillip's class if you were in my class) made a substitute cry. I admit I was part of it, I mean everyone had part of it because we took advantage of her. We pretty much didn't pay attention to her because it seemed like she didn't know what she was talking about. This could show bad rhetoric because the students and the substitute didn't have good communication between each other. In the end we were supposed to write an apology letter to the substitute because of our behavior which has to convince the sub that we were truly sorry. I guess that showed a little of good rhetoric because we had to apologize. At the same time, it became harder for us to get substitutes because of what had happened.

Many substitutes are different in every way and most students sees it as an opening for a little bit of freedom because they get to do more than they could with the regular teachers. Unfortunately, some students takes advantage of it too much that it becomes too much. Anyways, hopefully had fun enjoyed reading my little story and probably people from Harvard remembers it.

James why do you think that students take advantage of the substitutes? My answer would be that the reason why students take advantage because they think that they would not get as much trouble as if they were acting up with the regular teacher. In some cases, it is the substitute that sometimes does not respect the students and the students decide that since the sub is being disrespectful they will be disrespectful as well. I remember an incident in which the substitute was being disrespectful to the students and the so the students decided to fight back. I will not get into the details because I wasn’t there and I the information that I heard might not be accurate.

James, I'd like you to dig into the language. How are the words themselves different -- the words we use when talking to a sub versus a teacher?

Dear James,
I got to agree with you because when we have subs sometimes students take advantage and say or do things that they don't suppose to do. For example, there was this sub a while a go who got in an argument with a student and that wasn't a very good thing. Subs take their job seriuosly, but sometimes they are not good subs that makes students take advantage of them. Students should treat the subs like they treat their teachers and maybe things will change. This kind of situations do not happen every time we have a subs it only happens with some why do you think that happens?

Hey there James,

It is very true that students behave bad because there is a sub. I think this happens because they know that the sub doesn't know them. Students do this because they know they can act up and make up names when the sub asks for their name. I don't know why it exactly happens, but according to me the reason i do it is because you don't get this chances everyday. I mean teachers are only absent for emergencies and maybe are absent 1 or 2 times a year.

I have heard stories of the harvard site acting up and it is no coincidence that it happens at any other school. I remember that in 8th grade our teacher Mr. Rodis had to quit his job simply because we acted up everyday in his class. I was sent to the office everyday and i would never get in trouble with the principal. Everyone acted up and even some girls as well. I don't know, but i think we do it because we see other people doing it. Well that's it James, bad students like me do it because we don't see subs everyday.

I can honestly say that I hate the way most substitutes are treated. Just because they don't have the relationship that teacher's have with students doesn't mean that they should be taken advantage of. Most substitutes are pretty nice and very smart people. I've gotten to have some pretty interesting conversations with many of my substitutes. Even though I probably didn't do my work while they were there (which is what I hear teachers actually anticipate), I was able to learn about them instead of making them feel inferior.

Dear James,
In your introduction I think that you should of defined first then gave the explanation, so we can understand or comprehend better. You also, have to consider the subs that aren’t good or bad. In your second paragraph, your last sentence was it obligatory to write the letter or it was because you wanted to? Don’t include “I guess” because it shows that you don’t know your own topic, it looks worse esp. because it’s a personal experience. Also, try to mention when the sub takes there own rules to the extreme level- by including profanity. I’ve have had those kinds of subs. I agree, with Ms. Vernon you should compare it when we use the language with the teachers and with the subs.

Nice post and good topic. The points are pretty much true. substitutes are bad and good, but the students are the ones that either create the kind warm hearted teacher or thaat snotty obnoxious teacher. I was a bit taken off by the wholle substitute at first. I thought it was some new rhetoric term. I was slow at realizing that it was a substitute for the teacher. good job though

Wow.
Yeah, I remember the "making the sub cry" incident during 8th grade even though I wasn't there.
But here's the thing, we do take advantage of subs, but not necessarily all of them.
Take Mr. Falconer for example. We all know him. We all hold a level of respect for him. Is it because he's constantly involved in the school as a sub and a basketball coach?
Perhaps.
When it comes to teachers, we know we would never dare to do the things we do with subs. Would you have the nerve to pull out your music device in Ms. Tran's or Ms. Vernon's class and start listening to it?
Right! Because you would be scared because you know that they would hurt you.
With subs, you know that they'll be gone (most likely) the next day, never to see them again. So, might as well have some fun right?
I wonder if in college things change when there are subs....

Id like to agree with you. Me personally i feel that when a new teacher comes into a classroom or a visitor comes to observe the mood within the classroom changes. When there are substitutes usually the aura turns into one of taking advantage while when an important visitor comes it goes all quiete and awkward. This is what i have noticed.I believe we must have what we have been used to in order to be ourselves. If we do not have this we get lost in cofusion and different feelings.
